Line up the bottom of the template flush with the ceiling drywall and punch the cardboard with a scratch awl to mark mounting screw locations on the ceiling joist. You DEFINITELY want to get this right the first time because once electrical and duct connections are made, you have to hang the fan box on the screws without being able to actually see what you're doing.
